Bilge Pump

The bilge pump and float switch are not Duffy specific and are commonly available. Our boat has a Rule™ brand bilge pump rated for 360GPH and a separate Rule™ float switch. Some pumps have a float switch integrated into the pump housing.

Access

The bilge pump and float switch are accessible via a floor access panel just forward of the steering console.

Bilge Pump and Float Switch

Function

The pump will move large amounts of water for a short period of time. It will not keep the boat afloat if there is a steady and significant source of water entering the boat. If operated excessively, the pump will overheat and will either fail or will temporarily stop operating until it cools down.

A common source of water intrusion is from the propeller shaft seal, which can be adjusted or repacked.

Control

  • Automatic operation is controlled by the float switch
  • Manual operation is controlled by the Bilge Pump switch on the instrument panel, which bypasses the float switch. It is powered when the key switch is on.

Tests

  1. Manual Operation
With the key switch on, turn the Bilge Pump switch on. You will hear the pump running.
  2. Automatic Operation
With the access panel and key switch off, lift the float switch. The motor should run when the float is raised.
  3. Bilge drains
Pour water into the front and back drains on the floor of the boat. The water should quickly drain to the bilge where it will be pumped overboard on the Port side near the entrance to the boat. Clean the bilge of debris that may have been dislodged by this test. Our boat had fiberglass and other debris in the bilge from when the boat was manufactured.
